Food Security and Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation<\/h1>\n

In order to ensure development and stability in the Mediterranean, we must find alternatives to imports of raw materials, according to experts from the FAO and the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), among others, who have participated in an international seminar on food security policies in Barcelona.
\nThe increase in prices of raw materials and the volatility of the values of basic agricultural products currently makes food security a key issue for governments. In the Mediterranean, the region most dependent on international markets for food supplies, finding alternatives to imports is essential to guarantee development and stability.
\nTherefore, today, at the headquarters of Foment del Treball Nacional in Barcelona experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), among others, have participated in an international seminar on food security policies on a Euro-Mediterranean level, strategic products in the region, key logistical decisions in the current global market, and business opportunities for an agri-food sector.
\nIn the opening of the seminar, Sen\u00e9n Florensa, Executive President of the IEMed, and Cosimo Lacirignola, Secretary General of CIHEAM, highlighted the importance, on the 20th anniversary of the Barcelona Declaration, of continuing to foster cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean to deal with common problems and progress towards a more inclusive socioeconomic development. Lacirignola stressed that the post-2015 development agenda must guarantee food security as otherwise the stability of the region will be endangered.<\/p>\n

El paisatge de l’agricultura mundial s’ha redibuixat en els \u00faltims vint anys: l’increment dels preus de les mat\u00e8ries primeres i la volatilitat dels valors de productes b\u00e0sics agr\u00edcoles han donat pas a una inquietud significativa per les q\u00fcestions de sobirania aliment\u00e0ria. En aquest context, la Mediterr\u00e0nia \u00e9s la regi\u00f3 del m\u00f3n que m\u00e9s dep\u00e8n dels mercats internacionals per proveir-se d’aliments. Especialment la conca del Mediterrani, on la geografia segueix sent un handicap i l’acc\u00e9s a la tecnologia limitat.<\/p>\n

Per tot plegat, trobar alternatives a les importacions \u00e9s indispensable, ja que la depend\u00e8ncia aliment\u00e0ria pot acabar afectant les quotidianitats mediterr\u00e0nies, el desenvolupament social i l’estabilitat de la regi\u00f3.<\/p>\n

Per aquest motiu \u00e9s important debatre sobre pol\u00edtiques de seguretat aliment\u00e0ria a escala euromediterr\u00e0nia, productes estr\u00e0tegics de la regi\u00f3, decisions log\u00edstiques clau en l’actual mercat global, aix\u00ed com les oportunitats empresarials que presenta el sector agroalimentari a la Mediterr\u00e0nia.<\/p>\n
